Criminal Sentence 44: Your or You’re?

My battery died earlier today, conveniently allowing me to go to an auto parts store and see this:

“Bring in you’re old battery and we’ll give you $3.” (Or something to that effect.)

That
should be “your.” You can test if the contraction (“you’re”) is right
by pretending you don’t have a contraction and spelling it out:

“Bring in you are old battery and we’ll give you $3.”

As you can see, this does not make sense. It would make a cool insult, though: you old battery.

na forvo.com można usłyszeć wymowę każdego słowa z każdego języka na świecie – ok – na razie języków jest kilkanaście a słów też niewiele, ale każdy może dodać nowe – wystarczy mikrofon.

Może właśnie dlatego na razie większość polskich znajduje się w kategorii “bad words”

“Attached please find the annual report” – to prawda, że biznesowy angielski rządzi się swoimi prawami; to prawda, że formalne zasady pisania listów obowiązują. Ale czasy się zmieniają i zwroty sprzed 2(!) stuleci odchodzą do lamusa.

Część książek nadal zaleca informowanie o załącznikach w niezwykle mało naturalny sposób:

“Please find attached”, lub “attached please find”. oba zwroty mają grono wielbicieli, jednak wiele osób czuje, że coś tu nie gra – formułki są zbyt sztywne i zużyte. Nowe książki sugerują podejście znacznie bardziej naturalne:

I have attached the new report.
The new report is attached.
Please take a look at the attached report.
Replace the old report with the new one which is attached.
You will find the new report attached to this e-mail.
