Oh, that’s just one of those sayings that we also have in Polish like
“life is brutal and full of zasadzkas” so you just treat it as a funny
warning against life in general. The interesting thing about it is the
“sucking” bit:

You can call someone a “sucker” if you think that “idiot” is to
strong, similar in offensive power to “loser”.

according to merriam-webster to suck (apart from the more common
meanings) can also be:

3 : to act in an obsequious (służalczy) manner;
*when they want votes, the candidates come sucking around— W. G. Hardy*
*he sucked up to the boss*

(slang) : to be objectionable or inadequate
*people who’ve seen the move say it sucks*
and this is the meanng from your saying
